Know before you go

Book ahead
Several tubing hills sell timed sessions and fill on weekends and holidays. Reserve online before you drive up.
Sno-Parks
Taylor Creek, Blackwood Canyon and Echo Lake are free to play, but parking needs a California Sno-Park permit: $15 for a day or $40 for the season. Buy it online before you go; it is not sold at the lots.
Unofficial hills
Use groomed areas where you can. If you stop elsewhere, park with all four tires inside the white line, never block gates, and pack out every broken sled.
Roads
Carry chains. Storms close or restrict Highway 50, Highway 89 and I-80 with little notice.

Tahoe City Winter Sports Park and Granlibakken are in Tahoe City; North Tahoe Regional Park in Tahoe Vista is free if you bring a sled.

The most choice on the lake: Heavenly's lanes up the gondola, Hansen's on Ski Run Blvd and Tube Tahoe in Meyers, plus free play at Taylor Creek and Echo Lake.

West Shore

Blackwood Canyon Sno-Park, 3 miles south of Tahoe City, is the West Shore's free snow play. Bring your own sled and a Sno-Park permit.
